A quick trip to New Caledonia

We finally make it to Nouvelle Calédonie – New Caldedonia!

We grab a weather window and set sail from Auckland’s Viaduct on Saturday 23 September. Its just a 4 day trip to Noumea from Auckland. The weather gods were with us so it was a peaceful trip all round. Our only issue was lack of fish. Fish who didn’t show any particular interest in being caught. Not even one..

1260nm or so we finally arrive at our destination – Wednesday 27 September. We berth at Marina Sud – just a little outside the city. Its a bustling little marina with lots of friendly cruisers. The temperature is a nice 25deg. We spend the next few days finding our bearings. Noumea is a neat little city. Some lovely beaches nearby, local markets, great French restaurants and lots of amazing French patisseries. Its pretty windy up here so it makes for an ideal wind surf/kitesurf spot.

A few days later we set sail to Isle of Pines, an island southeast of Noumea. En-route we spend a few hours on anchor at Amedee Lighthouse, a fascinating little island with the clearest of clear blue waters, great for snorkeling. We spot a lot of sea snakes, which unknown to us, become a little too friendly and hitch a ride back to Noumea! A common sight in New Caledonia, the sea snake is one of the most venomous snakes in the world. Apparently its very hard to get a bite due to their very small mouth…They look pretty though with their blue/black stripe.

The Lighthouse itself is beautiful and was built in Paris in 1862 by an Eiffel tower engineer and was a necessity due to the amount of shipwrecks in the lagoon at that time. It was illuminated in 1865.

The Isle of Pines didn’t disappoint. Some of the most amazing beaches we have ever seen. We spend a few days on anchor here. We hire a car and take a road trip inland to Hortense Grotto and snorkel at the Natural Lagoon. THE most amazing natural lagoon. Some of us manage to eat the local delicacy that is ‘escargot’ – a rather large looking snail.

Another night or two was spent around the mining area of Prony Bay. The soil here is a rich mineral red which makes for some interesting landscape.

The trip went too fast in New Caledonia. Short but sweet. We sail back into Auckland’s Viaduct on Friday 27th October. And yip you guessed…no fish again.
