Our Kiwiana Summer trip 2018

After the excitement of the Millennium Cup, we wave farewell to our race team and continue our cruise around Aotearoa.

This time we are hopeful of a South Island trip however the weather gods are very busy in New Zealand during these past summer months!

Shortly after the Millennium Cup in Bay of Islands, the weather starts to turn. So we decide on sheltering in the magnificent Whangaroa Harbour. We hang close to Whangaroa town. A great spot for some hikes, a little provisioning and a beer at the local sports fish club. Its a pretty miserable low, lots of rain and wind, however by evening we are out paddleboarding and soaking up the calm ‘after’ the storm.

Next day its anchor up and onwards to the South Island. We grab a weather window, head up over Cape Reinga then down the West Coast. A tad lumpy it soon settles until we meet the hectic Cook Strait with a swell that pushes us nicely into Queen Charlotte Sounds.

We take the time to explore Blenheim and we are all in awe – rows and rows of grapes and award winning wineries! Its a wine buff’s(and yacht crews) heaven. Our surfers make a day trip to Kaikoura. They return tired but with good surf tales and even better photos.

We cruise around the Sounds and cross over Tasman Bay to Able Tasman National Park. Its still pretty windy but we do manage good anchorages around Tonga Bay and Torrent Bay – great places to explore the National Park. However the weather gods are soon chasing with cyclone Gita quickly bearing down with Cook Strait a direct hit. We head straight back to Picton and batten down the hatches. Luckily we missed the worst with just a day or two of fairly damp weather – we(and NZ) were very lucky this time.

Its not long before we commence our trip back North – back to Auckland. Back to the Viaduct, we wave goodbye to our guests(not before soaking up the Volvo stopover atmosphere), complete our washdowns, cover the interior and take a well deserved break. Until next time…
