Auckland 2009

JOW left Auckland Viaduct on the 19th January, headed for the Coromandel Peninsula and Tauranga for the first two weeks of our 6 week summer cruise. Timed it well to watch the first Team NZ training sail on the Waitamata for the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series. Had a short cruise to Man of War Bay on Waiheke Island for our first night.

Next day a lunch stop at Port Charles on the northern end of Coromandel then onto CooksBeach, a great anchorage near Whitianga. Arrived at the Port of Tauranga January 22nd and anchored just off MountMaunganui. Local restaurants and golf courses were well frequented and had the spectacle of the Surf Life saving competition at the Mount.

January 26th had a quick stop at Mayor Island en route back to Cooks Beach – fishing, surfing, kayaking, golf and relaxing for a couple of days.

Huruhi Harbour at Great Mercury Island is a great spot, fresh scallops!

Arrived back in Auckland 30th January ready for the racing action.

The Louis Vuitton Pacfic Series started in Auckland on the 31st January.

From the 9th to the 11th of February the Millennium Cup was run with 5 yachts entered this year, Janice of Wyoming, Thalia, Naos, Zenji and Silver Tip.

Great fun was had by all the crews, with pursuit racing around three different courses over three days and plenty of entertainment provided in the evenings too. JOW gained a 2nd place in the event! It was amazing to see all the Spinnakers flying.

On the water to watch Emirates Team NZ beat Alinghi in the race final on the 14th February, great event and even better to see the boats back on the Waitamata Harbour after all these years, with our boys out front!

17th February departed Auckland again heading north towards Whangaroa Harbour, for our last 10 days. Unfortunately the good weather ran out and we had a few days in the mist covered hills of this beautiful harbour. Good use of long lines and fishing rods ensured a great supply of snapper, sprats and cockles for seafood feasts.

22nd February anchored off MotukawanuiIsland in the Cavallis, a snapper and paua extravaganza was had, then on to Russell in the Bay of Islands. A couple of days in historic Russell. Golfing, sightseeing, and perusing the local galleries for artistic treasures, including a visit to the treaty house at Waitangi. A day was spent off Roberton Island; the walk up to the lookout is worth the excursion, a net drag on shore left the sprat and piper population intact.

February 25th anchored in Deep Water Cove for our last night.

On the 26th of February, our last day dawned with brilliant sunshine and the sea was like glass, were accompanied back down the coast by trillions of dolphins that put on a spectacular display for us all, a great way to finish a fabulousl trip.

Janice of Wyoming is planning to depart on May 18th 2009 for another fun filled adventure in Alaska! En route  plan a short stop in Tahiti then on to Hawaii for a cruise around Maui and Kauaui, due to arrive in Alaska mid July.
