Millennium Cup 2013

Team JOW took part in their third Millennium Cup in Auckland last weekend. Our usual race crew joined us for 3 days of racing in the Hauraki Gulf against 4 other yachts: Zefiro, Ohana, Sea Toy and our old adversary Silvertip. With light conditions forecast for the Sunday race we needed a strong performance in the first 2 days. Our tradition of wearing cowboy hats and launching water bombs at anyone within range (including the Police Launch!) were continued.

Race 1 started with 15-20kts wind from the SW, at 3rd boat away JOW got a good start and quickly passed the smallest yacht Sea Toy. The long downwind leg to Whangaparoa was going well, we had our new 1,200 square metre gennaker up and had closed on the 100ft Southernwind Zefiro, approaching the mark the boys at the back of the boat called for the drop. We had the foot and first 30ft of sail onboard when the halyard dropped and we lost a large portion of the sail over the side. As the sail was dragged down the side of the boat it ripped the smoke flare off the lifebuoy igniting it. So, whilst trying to recover the sail we were being covered in bright orange smoke. We quickly hauled the remains of the sail onboard and continued racing. Fortunately our position wasn’t affected and we finished the race in 2nd place behind Zefiro. A highlight of the day was seeing Team New Zealand pass close in front of us foiling – a very impressive sight.

Adjustments to the handicap following the first day racing saw JOW still starting 3rd but a few minutes closer to Zefiro. Racing with our smaller gennaker we still had great downwind leg, unfortunately we lost out on the long upwind beat back to the harbour. We could match the much longer Ohana for speed but were unable to point as high, Ohana and Silvertip passed us. Zefiro took the bullet, Ohana pipping Silvertip for 2nd right on the finish line.

The 3rd and final race took place with 10-12kts wind, not great conditions for JOW even with handicap adjustments that saw us first boat away. Light conditions meant a quiet race, so much so that the foredeck crew were snapped reading the sunday paper once the kite had been set. Another 4th place saw us take 4th overall, as always it was the taking part that counted and if there were prizes for enthusiasm and dancing JOW would have won.

Many thanks to our awesome crew:
